Home  Student Story  Bilal Haider Shamsi

His name is Bilal Haider Shamsi, who is from Pakistan. There is a famous saying in Pakistan about this name: the friendship of China and Pakistan is higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the Pacific, and sweeter than honey. He is currently a PhD in the School of Medicine at Xi'an Jiaotong University. He comes from an intellectual family full of respect and love. His parents are both retired teachers, teaching and educating students all over their country. His wife is an endocrinologist, his brother a double postdoctorate of Molecular Biology of Agriculture, his sister-in-law a Doctor of Education, his older sister a professional ophthalmologist, and his younger sister an expert in histopathology. Growing up in a family of such a scholarly atmosphere, he always believed his father's words: “Education can not only arm brains and remove ignorance; but also ignite the light of hope. And a single spark can start a prairie fire.”

Therefore, he cherished every chance to receive a education, and he hungrily absorbs nutrients in the ocean of knowledge like a sponge absorbing water. He always ranks at the top of every study period, steadily and stable. He was conferred the "Best Student Award" after he graduated from Pakistan's top medical school. He won a scholarship for Outstanding Student of Pakistan Higher Education Commission, came to China, and began his study of Master's and doctoral degrees at the Xi'an Jiaotong University. One could say that studying in China is a most important learning opportunity in his life.

At the Xi'an Jiaotong University, his efforts were again recognized by the school. He won the Best Overseas Graduate Award and Best Overseas Doctor Award. He is a diligent student, with teachers praising him for his diligence and graveness; he is an excellent doctor, with patients thanking him for his professionalism and patience; he is also a rigorous academic scholar, with a natural love for learning and expending 100% of his efforts. He has published many medical articles, with one collected in SCI.

Bilal is not like a typical science geek in most people’s mind. People who know him will marvel at his natural grace, rational analysis and acting talent. He is always refined and gentle. It is always a pleasure talking with him, on endless topics, from the latest medical academic research to health experiences, from Pakistani culture to Xi'an Hui Street Food. He will always speak frankly with assurance, and regard you as a good friend of many years.

He seems to have a special talent for drama, poetry recitation, singing and language learning ability. He had won a lot of awards on regional speech contests back in Pakistan in his childhood. So far, he has written two Chinese poems and five Chinese songs, and has them played on many occasions. He won the second prize in the fifth session of Shaanxi Province Chinese recitation contest in 2010, and the first prize in the sixth session in 2011.

He participated in the fifth CCTV "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for overseas students in 2012 as an overseas student representative from Shaanxi Province. His singing was highly recognized by audience and the judges. He is a host for several international culture festivals, Chinese speech contests and sports meetings at Xi'an Jiaotong University. He is also a member of Xi'an Jiaotong University literary association. Xi'an Jiaotong University provided a broad stage for his widespread interest. With the help and love of teachers and students here, he is able to live out an excellent life.

Bilal likes traveling in his spare time, and posting travel pictures online to share with everyone. He makes friends with Chinese, knows Chinese etiquette well, and celebrates Chinese traditional festivals. His friends always invite him to weddings and funerals, viewing him as a close friend.

When talking about the friendship of China and Pakistan, Bilal can be very serious. He believes in the importance of the friendship, and tries to become a better person, save more children and serve people in China and Pakistan with full enthusiasm. He hopes the long-standing and well-established friendship of China and Pakistan will pass on from generation to generation. He always remembers his mother's words: "People only live once, and we live for others". And he is willing to devote his life to these words.
